Attending conferences to make yourself known: a good idea?

Conferences can be effective if you need to promote a product or if you want to develop your company’s reputation

Conferences have many advantages because, first of all, they allow you not only to make yourself known to a wide audience but also associate you in round tables with other partners whose reputation is well established and with whom you build relationships and with whom your own reputation influences theirs as well as their influence on yours. In addition, they are often hosted by journalists and allow you to have a media or social network impact. 

Moreover, the organisers tend to disseminate it and if your conferences prove interesting, you will find them in their own networks… The list is far from exhaustive.

An interesting and inexpensive way

Whether you’ve just started your business or want to make yourself known at a lower cost, it’s a good idea to attend conferences to gain some notoriety. These events often take the form of speeches that take place in amphitheatres in front of an audience of insiders or beginners. 

The primary goal through participation in a conference will be to introduce your product to the different people who listen to you. Contrary to appearances, it is not a question of selling but of making yourself known to a wide audience.

If you want to promote your product through conferences, it is important to be subtle and discreet. Indeed, by definition, a conference is a “presentation” that must bring something to your audience at the cultural level. For example, it is very interesting to position yourself on conferences that deal with a current theme or a scientific theme, and whether the latter are related to your product, service or expertise.

It is essential not to apologize for your product at the risk that your conference will turn into a real show of chatter. Adopting an aggressive tactic will have two main impacts on your audience: they will feel that you are forcing their hand and trying to fool them. Needless to say, when an event organizer uses a speaker, he or she expects the person to bring a professional perspective to the subject, rather than oversell his or her business.

How to participate in conferences?

Once the interest of participating in conferences has been well understood, the most complicated step is usually to find conferences on which it is possible to intervene. Indeed, you will often find it difficult, as an entrepreneur or trader, to give conferences on technical subjects in the fields of interest to you. 

Beyond the lack of time, it may already take a minimum of peer recognition to intervene in this type of event. To force the hand of the organizers, it is often advisable to go to the side of fairs that bring together professionals in a specific field (hotels, new technologies…) and that will allow you to hold conferences relatively easily. Do not hesitate to contact the CCIs, which often organize thematic days during which you can intervene as an entrepreneur from a particular region.
